  • Shivraj Mohite studies in a Malayalam-medium school in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, and scored A+ in all his subjects.
  • Shivraj, a student of St George’s High School, Vennikkulam, is among several children of migrant workers in Kerala who had been part of Ernakulam district’s ROSHNI scheme, aimed at helping them overcome the language barrier and learn Malayalam, English, and Hindi.

  • The IMD has entered the pre-cyclone watch stage and said, ” This system will continue to move north-eastwards and concentrate into a depression (wind speed of 31 – 61km/hr) over central parts of Bay of Bengal by May 24. Further, it is likely to continue to move north-eastwards and strengthen into a cyclone.”
  • By May 26, the cyclone (wind speed 62 – 88km/hr) would track a northward movement and is expected to barrel into Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal as a severe cyclone (wind speed over 89 – 117 km/hr).

  • Doing away with yet another colonial vestige, the Navy has changed names of ‘Jackstaff’ and ‘Jack’ on board ships to ‘National Flag Staff’ and ‘National Flag’.
  • ‘Jack’ refers to a flag in naval parlance, usually the national flag, and ‘Jackstaff’ is a short pole on the bow of a ship from which it is flown. Both terms have their origins in British naval traditions.

  • Notwithstanding the turbulence in their bilateral ties, the Maldives will soon launch India's RuPay service, which a senior minister has said "will bolster the Maldivian Rufiyaa."
  • RuPay, a product of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is the first of its global card payment network in India, with wide acceptance at ATMs, POS devices, and e-commerce websites across India.
  • Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed while announcing how both India and China have agreed to use local currency in bilateral trade, spoke about the upcoming launch of India's RuPay.
