11 July 2024, Quick Facts of the Day

1.         The 12th edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently took place in Abu Dhabi, emphasizing bilateral defence and security cooperation. Established in 2006, the JDCC has facilitated significant growth in defence interactions between the two nations. Discussions at the meeting covered areas such as joint exercises, training, defence industrial cooperation, and research and development (R&D). Both countries have engaged in various collaborative initiatives, including trilateral air exercises and naval exercises like "Gulf Star 1", Zayed Talwar, and participation in IDEX/NAVDEX. The UAE's strategic location along the Arabian Peninsula and its coastline along the Strait of Hormuz add geopolitical significance to their bilateral defence engagements.

2.         Celebrated on July 10th, Global Energy Independence Day highlights the pursuit of energy self-sufficiency and sustainability. It urges individuals, businesses, and governments to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources and adopt cleaner, sustainable alternatives. The 2024 theme, “Energy Transition Now: Embrace the Future,” underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable energy practices. As climate change accelerates and energy demand rises, this day emphasizes the need for innovation and commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Recognized globally, it champions energy autonomy and diverse sustainable energy sources.

3.         Groynes are low-lying structures made of wood or concrete, extending out to sea from the shore. They trap sediment, dissipate wave energy, and restrict sediment transfer caused by longshore drift, a process where prevailing winds move waves and sediment along the shore at an angle. Groynes help slow shore erosion. Groynes are effective in the short-term, providing immediate protection compared to longer-term soft engineering methods. However, they can be intrusive and cause problems in other coastal areas.

4.         A study published in Science reveals that water microdroplets can break down minerals into nanoparticles. These microdroplets are significantly smaller than raindrops and engage in chemical reactions much faster than bulk water. The study demonstrated that applying high voltage to mineral microparticles in water caused them to break into nanoparticles within 10 milliseconds. This process has potential applications in agriculture and understanding the origins of life. Nanoparticles (NPs), defined by the ISO, are nano-objects with dimensions between 1 to 100 nm and come in various shapes and structures. NPs have diverse applications in medicine, electronics, agriculture, and more. The study also differentiates between visible water droplets and invisible water vapour.

5.         The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet recently appointed Dr. BN Gangadhar as the head of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Dr. Sanjay Behari as president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board. The NMC, established by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, replaces the Medical Council of India (MCI) to reform the medical education sector and address issues like corruption. Serving as India's top regulator of medical education and practice, the NMC consists of four autonomous boards focusing on undergraduate medical education, postgraduate medical education, medical assessment and rating, and ethics and medical registration.
