1. UNESCO reported a surge in violence against environmental journalists globally during the World Press Freedom Day Conference. The report highlighted 44 journalists killed in the span of 15 years, with Asia and the Pacific experiencing the highest number of killings. The World Press Freedom Index, released annually by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), evaluates press freedom globally. India's ranking improved slightly in 2024 to 159 among 180 countries, but its score decreased, indicating threats to press freedom. Concerns include the detention of journalists, media regulation laws, and political and economic pressures limiting media independence.

 

2. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts hosted an exhibition commemorating International Labour Day, featuring lithographs by German artist Karl Erich Muller. Muller's lithographs depicted various aspects of 1970s Indian life, emphasizing simplicity and beauty without relying on abundant resources. The IGNCA, established in 1987 under the Ministry of Culture, serves as a hub for research, academic pursuits, and dissemination in the arts.

 

3. Cyclone Hidaya, named by France's overseas tertiary, is forecasted to impact Tanzania's coast near Dar es Salaam, potentially affecting regions like Tanga and Morogoro. Despite Kenya's usual safety from cyclones due to its proximity to the equator, preparations are underway for Cyclone Hidaya, which could mark Kenya's first experience with a cyclone.

 

4.  The 7th India-Indonesia Joint Defence Cooperation Committee meeting showcased both nations' commitment to enhancing defence collaboration. Progress on bilateral defence initiatives, including defence industry ties and maritime security, was reviewed. India and Indonesia upgraded their strategic partnership to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" in 2018, emphasizing shared interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
